Shopify Store Getting Traffic But No Sales? 12 Conversion Fixes That Actually Work
Featured Insight

Your Shopify analytics show visitors coming in every day. Instagram is sending traffic, your ads are getting clicks, and people are clearly landing on your products.

But the orders aren't coming.

It's one of the most frustrating places to be as a store owner, because it feels like you've done the hard part. Getting traffic is hard. But traffic without sales usually points to a few specific problems on the store itself, and most of them are fixable without spending another rupee on ads.

Here's where to look, in the order we check when we audit a Shopify store.

First, Find Where People Are Dropping Off

Before changing anything, open Shopify Analytics and look at your conversion funnel:

  • Sessions → Added to cart: if very few visitors add to cart, the problem is your product pages, pricing, or the traffic itself.
  • Added to cart → Reached checkout: if people add to cart but don't start checkout, look at your cart page, shipping costs, and surprises.
  • Reached checkout → Purchased: if people abandon at checkout, look at payment options, delivery charges, trust, and form friction.

Each drop-off has different fixes. Guessing wastes time; the funnel tells you where to start.

Fix #1: Check the Traffic Before Blaming the Store

Not all traffic is buying traffic. Broad Instagram reach, giveaway followers, wrong-country visitors, and ads targeting the wrong audience all show up as "sessions" without any real intent to buy.

Check where your traffic comes from and which sources convert. If organic search and returning visitors convert while one ad campaign doesn't, the store may be fine and the campaign needs fixing.

Product Page Fixes

The product page is where buying decisions happen. Most conversion problems live here.

Fix #2: Better Product Photos

Customers can't touch your product, so the photos have to do that job. Show multiple angles, close-ups of texture and detail, the product in use, and a sense of scale. For fashion, show it on a real person. One flat image on a white background isn't enough for most products.

Fix #3: Answer Questions Before They're Asked

Every unanswered question is a reason to leave. Your product page should clearly cover size and fit, material, what's in the box, care instructions, delivery time, and the return policy. Size charts, ingredient lists, and short FAQs directly on the page reduce hesitation.

Fix #4: Make Reviews Visible

Reviews are often the deciding factor, especially for newer brands. Show star ratings near the product title, real customer photos, and the review count. Ask every customer for a review after delivery; a steady trickle matters more than a big batch.

Fix #5: A Sticky Add-to-Cart on Mobile

On a phone, customers scroll through photos and descriptions, and the "Add to cart" button disappears off-screen. A sticky add-to-cart bar keeps the buying action one tap away at all times.

Trust and Pricing Fixes

Fix #6: Show Shipping Costs and Delivery Dates Early

Unexpected costs at checkout are one of the most common reasons people abandon a cart. Show shipping charges, free-shipping thresholds, and estimated delivery dates on the product page, not as a surprise on the last step.

Fix #7: Build Visible Trust

For a brand customers haven't heard of, trust has to be earned on the page: a clear return or exchange policy, secure payment icons, a real "About" page, a visible contact number or WhatsApp link, and real social proof. A store that looks like it could disappear tomorrow doesn't get the first order.

Fix #8: Make the Brand Look Like a Brand

A default theme with stock photos and a basic logo can make a good product look like a dropshipping store. Consistent branding, from logo and colours to photography style and packaging shots, makes customers more comfortable paying a premium. That's what our work with Swanky's Signature was about: making a luxury product look and feel luxury online.

Checkout Fixes

Fix #9: Offer the Payment Methods Your Customers Use

For Indian stores, that means UPI, cards, net banking, wallets, and usually Cash on Delivery, through gateways like Razorpay, Cashfree, or PayU. For international customers, express options like Shop Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay reduce friction. Missing a customer's preferred payment method is an instant exit.

Fix #10: Handle COD Smartly (for Indian Stores)

COD can increase conversions, but it also brings fake orders and returned parcels (RTO) that eat into margins. Instead of removing COD entirely, many brands:

  • Confirm COD orders through WhatsApp or SMS before shipping
  • Offer a small discount or free shipping for prepaid orders
  • Check pincode serviceability on the product page
  • Limit COD on high-value orders or high-RTO pincodes

Fix #11: Recover Abandoned Checkouts

Shopify has built-in abandoned checkout emails, and many stores never turn them on or leave the default text untouched. Set up a short sequence with a friendly reminder, an answer to common objections, and possibly a small incentive. For Indian audiences, WhatsApp recovery messages often perform even better than email.

Mobile Experience Fix

Fix #12: Test Your Store Like a Customer, on a Real Phone

Most Shopify traffic is mobile. Open your store on a mid-range Android phone on mobile data and try to buy something. Do popups block the screen? Is the menu confusing? Are buttons too small? Does the page jump while loading? Does the checkout form fight with autofill?

Slow speed belongs in this category too. A store that takes too long to load loses customers before they see a single product; our guide on why Shopify stores are slow walks through the most common causes.

What Not to Do

  • Don't add more apps to fix conversions. Five popups, a spin-the-wheel, a countdown timer, and a "someone in Delhi just bought this" notification make stores feel desperate, and slower.
  • Don't discount your way out of it. If the store doesn't build trust, a 20% discount just means losing money on fewer orders.
  • Don't change ten things at once. Fix the biggest drop-off first, measure for a couple of weeks, then move to the next.

Traffic That Converts Starts With the Right Traffic

Once your store converts well, the cheapest way to grow is organic traffic from people actively searching for what you sell. That's where Shopify SEO comes in; we've put together a full Shopify SEO guide covering what Shopify gets right, what it gets wrong, and what to fix.

FAQs

Why does my Shopify store get traffic but no sales?
The most common reasons are low-intent traffic, weak product pages (poor photos, missing details, no reviews), surprise shipping costs, a lack of trust signals, missing payment options, and a poor mobile experience. Shopify's conversion funnel report shows which stage is losing customers.

What is a good conversion rate for a Shopify store?
It varies a lot by industry, price point, and traffic source, so compare your store against its own past performance and fix the biggest funnel drop-offs first rather than chasing an industry average.

Should I offer Cash on Delivery on my Shopify store in India?
For most Indian D2C stores, yes, since many customers still prefer it. Reduce the risk with COD confirmation messages, prepaid incentives, pincode checks, and limits on high-value COD orders.

Do Shopify conversion apps actually work?
Some do, like good review apps and well-built upsells. But stacking many apps slows the store and clutters the experience. Fixing the fundamentals (photos, product info, trust, checkout, and speed) usually does more than adding another app.

How long does it take to improve a Shopify store's conversion rate?
Quick fixes like shipping transparency, trust signals, and abandoned checkout recovery can show results within weeks. Deeper changes such as product page redesigns and branding improvements take longer but compound over time.
